While travel pros give you a lot of wise advice for sleeping on airplanes, like not crossing your legs, bringing pillows, eating light, and avoiding alcohol, knowing that you got a great price on your airplane ticket may help you rest better when you travel.
Following some generalizations is a great way to get the lowest price on your airplane ticket. Then, you can relax and drift off to sleep, knowing that you paid less than most people on your flight.
Booking Domestic Travel
The best time to book domestic travel is on a Saturday that is right before the 30-day mark. For example, if you want to fly on September 1, start by counting back 30 days to August 2. Then, go back until you get to a Saturday. You need, however, to set the alarm very early because you are most likely to find the best prices at 6 AM Eastern Standard Time. While that may seem awful early, by booking on a Saturday that is closest to being 30 days ahead of your planned flight at 6 AM, you may save 4 %. Since the average domestic plane ticket is $379, you may save $15 on each trip. Especially if you are a frequent flyer, that savings can add up.
Booking International Travel
If you are looking to travel internationally, then book your tickets on a Sunday that is four months away from your flight date. For example, if you plan to travel abroad on August 1, then book your ticket on the first Sunday in April. Again, averages show that you are likely to save the most money by booking at 6 AM Eastern Standard Time. Using this statistical average may net you a 6 % savings. Your savings can add up quickly.
The average plane ticket to Canada costs $415, so you stand to save $24, the average ticket to Mexico costs $451, so you stand to save $27.06, the average plane ticket to Europe costs $1,158 so you might save $69.48. The average plane ticket to Asia costs $1,099, so the average savings is $65.94.
Do You Have flexibility?
If you have flexibility in your travel itinerary, then you can save even more. If you plan to fly in the United States, statistics show that you can save 11 % by booking a September flight. Bump your trip back to October if you plan to travel internationally to enjoy the lowest airfare prices.
Holidays Make a Difference
You will want to use some special guidelines if you plan to book a holiday flight. Get home for Christmas by booking between October 8 and November 19. Celebrate in the New Year by booking your trip in November when you will save an average of 8 %.
There is a whole world waiting to be explored. Saving money on each plane ticket that you buy helps you explore it at a faster rate if you put that money back for your next vacation. Alternatively, purchasing tickets at a lower price or looking for promos helps you have more money to spend while on vacation or on a business trip.
So take your time. Don’t rush. Make the right choices and plan so that you can enjoy and save at the same time.
